hotshot... don't ya? If you haven't noticed, you're ten minutes
late! While the rest of us are all sittin here waitin to begin
this lesson, there you are hangin out with your friends, smokin
cigarettes, or God only knows what else! And now you think you
could just stroll on in here any time you want to and....
OOPS! Sorry about that.
I was getting flashbacks to my old high school days. So sorry...
Alright... so I'm no
comedian. That's why I make my living online.... DOY! I
promise I'll just stick to the lesson from this point on... really.. I
promise! (how rude ;-)
In today's lesson, we're just going
to jump right in. Really... I swear! No long-winded, quirky
little stories or psycho-babble rambling (okay...maybe just one quirky
story - Oh, and, of course, that little flashback at the intro to
this lesson... but we both know that really wasn't my fault ;-).
We've got a lot of topics to cover
in this lesson and I'm really excited to get started.
But as usual, first I'd like to
take a minute and go over some of the things we've already covered in
our previous lessons just to take things one step further and try to
put everything into a little better perspective for you.
Get ready though... Because
I'm about to drop a bombshell shortly!
As you already know... your primary
focus should be building your email list of opt-in subscribers (no
matter what type of business or service you're offering - especially
ecommerce).
You should have your homepage
designed with one purpose - getting the email address. You should
have all the links (if you must have any links at all) focused upon
getting the email address. All your sub-pages should be focused
on one thing - getting the email address.
Man, I hope this is starting to
sink in by now....
It is? GREAT!
Now, what about those folks who
don't give us their email address immediately?
Well, let's talk about those
dummies :-0
We know that some folks will
immediately give us their email address (ching) ... while others will
seem to battle it out to the end. And it's those who refuse to
give up their email address that we'll focus the rest of our website
around.
Sneaky...heh?
That's why we do these things:
- We regularly add quality,
informative content to our site to demonstrate to these hard-knockers
that they NEED to subscribe to our newsletter or they just
might miss out on something huge.
- We continuously present new offers on our website -
free reports, free downloads, free newsletter subscriptions... anything
to entice them to take us up on one of our offers.
- We strategically place sign-up forms, freebies,
contests, etc. all over the sub-pages of our website as a constant
reminder that they could join in on the fun too.
- We use content pages (like blogs and forums) to
continuously demonstrate to our customers that we're an expert in our
field, we have a lot of value to offer, and we care about them - it's
all about them. We're here to help them. It might be
"saving them money" or "solving a problem" - but rest assured... we're
here to help you
Mr. and Mrs. Customer!

but I think you get the picture. Everything we do on our website
will be focused on (fill in the blanks):

Now... do you remember how we
talked about my online pet shop back in lesson 1? You
remember...don't you? The one that made me over $60,000 from a
crappy little 7 page site.
Well, I think now's the perfect
time to take another look at that business model, the website's MWR
(most wanted response), and the overall design challenges I
faced. I'm confident - now that you understand so much more about
the importance of building your opt-in email list and your
relationships with your customers - that you'll gain a sharper,
clearer, better understanding of WHY that website worked so well.
Please keep in mind however, that
it wasn't all roses at first...
Also, keep these "Stupid Me" points
in mind as well...
- In my mind... I just wanted to
sell products and make money with my store. Just load up the
products and drive traffic to my website.
- I already had a handful of top-notch drop shippers
all lined up and I was getting (what I believed) great pricing on the
products.
- I had no desire to put "content" on the site.
Hell, I was getting into the retail business. I wasn't a freakin'
writer. Give me more products!
- I had no desire to publish a newsletter either - why
would I - I was selling pet products. I wasn't looking to win a
Pulitzer Prize.
- A blog? What the heck was that (and who
cared?) I didn't want to write! I only wanted to make money
for God sake!
- No "sales signs" flashing all over the site?
Ya... right! I'd lower my price to 2 cents over cost if that's
what I had to do. I was going to sell dammit!
Now, I'd like you to also keep
these "Smart Me"
points in mind:
- I was extremely ambitious and
very customer service oriented. I really did care about my
customers and I would have bent over backwards to please them... if I
ever actually got the chance to.
- I already had my own product developed (a pet
memorial) and I was aggressive about showcasing it to my potential
customers (in addition to my other products).
- I hired expensive web designers to do all sorts of
"fancy" graphics and things to make my site look very professional and
inviting.
- I bought several different domains (and websites) and
setup those extra sites to snatch up even more traffic and funnel them
into my store.
- I had a no hassle return policy.
- I paid for a "high-tech" shopping cart system,
complete with a kick-butt 500 mb 2,000 ram jet, super el' deluxe
database built in.
- I setup a toll-free 800 customer service number and
even a dedicated 800 toll free sales line. Hell... I was Mr. Big
Time! All my friends and family were quite impressed...
- I accepted all major credit cards.
- I even advertised in several newspapers regularly and
even with some major online ad agencies.
I guess the point I'm trying
to make here is this. I thought I was doing everything right in
the beginning. I spared nothing. But after years of
struggling and trying dozens of ways to make sales, I was going broke
faster than I could imagine.
Why? I'll tell ya why... I
had no clue how to sell online. That's why!
Luckily, after falling so deep in
debt with this money pit (but I was so in love with my baby) that I
couldn't sink any lower, I finally got smart. Why? Again, I'm not
sure... something just sparked. Soon thereafter I started
worrying less about sales on the website and started focused more on
building "LONG-TERM" relationships with my website visitors.
Once I uncovered this revelation,
my sales soon skyrocketed. All those advertising dollars I was
continuously wasting on "hits" to my website (and nobody buying) and
customers never returning again... were now a thing of the past!
Now, when I got a "hit" to my
website, my only focus was getting this valued customer to give me
their email address. Hell, it didn't cost my customers anything
to give me their email address, plus they we're getting something
extremely valuable in return like a report or a freebie.
On top of that, once I did get
their email address, I now had a customer for life.
And guess what I could offer that
customer now... hmmmm
- My own products
- Wholesale products
- Drop shipped products
- Affiliate products
- My services
- Affiliate services
- Joint Ventures (more on this later)
Yup! All of the above.
How cool is that?
When I wasn't capturing my
customer's email addresses, none of these additional money makers were
even remotely possible for me. Customers simply visited my
website, usually never purchased a product, and then left my site never
to be heard from again.
I finally realized (the hard way)
that all the advertising I was doing in the past...
SALE - SALE - SALE...
...was a total waste. NOBODY
CARED!
But they soon started
caring when they saw my new ads in pet magazines and newsletters:

Once I smartened up and did some creative thinking and began
advertising the "right way", it was so effective that I received
thousands upon thousands of visitors to my site regularly. In the
past I was lucky to get a few hundred hits a week (on a GREAT week).
See the difference?
Right now I'd like you to take
another look - again - at my pet shop scenario. I'll bet my
favorite alligator skin cowboy boots you'll pick out at least a dozen
"AH-HA's" this time around that you overlooked the first time you read
this same scenario way back in lesson one.
| My $60,000 A Year Online "Pet Shop"
Before the Internet was even
beginning to become so popular, I owned several websites related to
Dogs and Cats. One site in particular was an online store selling dog
gifts.
This one site raked in just
over $60,000 in less than one year from a simple 6 or 7 page site...
... More importantly though
was how I made that money from the site...
I found several reputable
drop ship suppliers for pet related products and gifts, but I knew that
if I put up a site that was an "e-store" just selling pet gifts I
wouldn't make much money. I wouldn't make any money selling these items
on eBay either. I needed to be very clever...
So what I did was I created a
simple site that was ONLY geared towards housebreaking a new puppy. A
"highly targeted niche" that would have little competition in the
search engines as well.
Then I setup my website with
ONE PRIMARY FOCUS. Get everyone who visited the site to give me their
email address. How did I get their email?
Simple... I offered a free
downloadable report titled:
"6 Simple
And Effective Ways To Housebreak Your New Puppy In 7 Days Or Less"
This report was prominently
displayed on the homepage (capture page) of my site with nothing else!
There were no links to anything. You landed on my site and either
downloaded the report or you didn't. If you did decide to enter your
email and download the report, you were then redirected into the
website. (This is known as a "forced" opt-in page).
This report was downloaded
thousands upon thousands of times by visitors to my site. More
importantly, I built a database of targeted email addresses that
allowed me to follow up with and "back-end" products to my list on a
consistent basis.
I knew everyone who
downloaded the report just got a new puppy. That made it simple to
create highly effective email copy. So I provided GREAT content in my
follow up emails, plus I continuously offered affiliate product
endorsements for other products that generated incredible affiliate
commissions for me.
I only had one small text
link on the site to the product catalog that simply read "Visit My Gift
Shop", and this link wasn't even available to anyone unless they'd
already given me their email address.
This "gift shop" link took a
visitor directly to a small online gift shop where I sold some unique
pet products and also my coveted "Pet Memorials" for a nice additional
income.
I also had a "ghost writer"
write an entire 84 page book for me on "Your Puppy's Health And Well
Being". I paid the ghost writer $150 to write the entire book and sold
over 1200 copies of it for $10 each.
Here's the rounded off
numbers from that site:
• Affiliate Sales =
$29,000
• Book Sales = $12,000
• Product Sales =
$19,000
I made over $1000.00 per week
from this little 7 page website and didn't have to ship one product or
warehouse and goods.
Do you see the point I'm
trying to make here? If I had a full blown web store that offered
everything from dog bowls to cat nip and everything in between, and I
didn't only focus on capturing email addresses, my business would have
died a quick death.... GUARANTEED!
Folks aren't
looking to get online and go shopping. They are looking for
INFORMATION!
Let me say that again...
Folks browsing the web are
looking for INFORMATION!
And it's your job to provide
them with this information. You can sell them "STUFF" later! First, you
need to build a relationship with them. Then, when you send an email to
them they'll be what's known as a "Highly Responsive" customer and
they'll whip out their credit card and eagerly give you their money!
That's how you make sales
and LOTS of money online!
You need to learn to build
relationships with your website visitors and combine that with the
"INCREDIBLE" power of email marketing to sell products and
services to your customers on the "back-end".
That's also when your drop
shipping sales will flourish!
Best of all... the free
information you provide could be on any subject - ANYTHING - as long as
it relates to your target audience... Sales will follow!

And there you have it my friend. That's the exact same scenario
you read in lesson 1, but this time I bet it makes a lot more sense to
you now.
Naturally, I laid out this
"business plan" in it's simplest terms right now for the purpose of
demonstration here, but I assure you that this was exactly what I did
to earn a substantial amount of money from this site several years ago.
And just think about the kind of
money you could earn once you setup 10 websites like this? Let's
figure that out...
$60,000.00
X 10 websites = $600,000.00 per year
Not bad...eh?
So now you might be asking
yourself... Dave... where's this site now?
And my answer to you would be
pretty simple. You wouldn't believe me if I told you what
happened to this website.
Let's just say I've chalked that
lesson up as another BIG learning experience in life. Never do
business with family! Perhaps, before we finish these lessons, I'll
embarrass myself and let the cat outta the bag about how naive and
stupid I really am, but for now... my lips are sealed!
But on a better note... I still
have all those names from that website in a database that I still - to
this day - send out promotions and affiliate offers to on a regular
basis. And guess what else... the list still makes me money...
more money than most full blown "high tech" e-stores are making online
today. And that list is much more important to me than a silly
domain name or web page - 1,000,000 times more valuable.
Now, let me get one more thing out
of the way right now as well. Yes, this course does cover drop
shipping, setting up a web "e-store", and also selling online in
general.
But if you haven't yet begun to
realize, there is something extremely more important than all those
things combined and I want to make it 100% crystal clear to you right
now.
The money is in
developing your own info products and building your list!
The money's in producing and selling your own products
and services, combined with affiliate endorsements and creative writing
skills! Then, you throw in a few sales on the back-end from drop
shippers and alike - AFTER you already have a list built!
That, my friend, is the true
formula for success online!
You need to learn about and
understand these three VERY IMPORTANT skills to make money online...
There's no getting around it!
- Build a list - lots of lists
- Learn to write convincing sales copy
- Create your own products and services
- Market your products and services (and affiliate
products and services) to your list regularly
- Use drop shippers and affiliate products for
back-end sales
That's exactly what I do online to
make a full time living and it rocks!

be honest it's very important and I don't want to short change ya!)

just jump right into some more ways to MAKE MONEY with your own
info-product...

Let's get moving...
First, you need to do some intense
brainstorming. I know... I know... your brain hurts! Oh
well... suck it up! My brain hurts too! When my brain stops
hurting I know I'm in trouble. And you should feel the same way
now that you're going to make your living online!
So what do you need to brainstorm
about?
As we talked about before, you need
to figure out what knowledge you possess and how you can capitalize on
that knowledge. What special traits, life experiences,
sacrifices, have you made that you can now write about?
We all have certain skills we don't
even realize we have. You have skills I'm sure you're great at
that I wouldn't have a clue about. And I'm sure the opposite is
also true. So you need to find out what one of your truly
"gifted" skills are and use that skill to make money. This
brainstorming may also help you to develop a marketable niche that you
never even thought of.

The VERY BEST way for you to come
up with your niche', your target audience, is by FIRST considering
(intensely) where your skills and knowledge lie. So many folks
online fall in love with a product and decide that's what they want to
sell and that's ass-backwards in my opinion.
For instance, I fell in love with
my pet memorial. For this reason, I wanted to develop a site
around pet products. But what I failed to realize is that the
competition for almost any product online (or offline) is
immense. Chances are you can't compete! Sad... but very
true.
That's why you need to analyze your
skills and knowledge. Once you know what your skills are and what
subjects you have a strong knowledge about... that's when you decide on
the "theme" of your website. Only then is it time to begin
focusing on your niche'!
Think back to lesson 2 when we
talked about brainstorming our niche for Candle Lite Cooking. I
chose that theme for several reasons, mainly because I have a strong
interest in cooking and I love to cook. (I'm also one hell of a
romantic)!
In my mind, I knew I could create
content, my own info products, articles, etc. very easily because I
like the subject and I KNOW a lot about the subject. That's
extremely important.
But what if I fell in love with a
product (or a company I found who had great wholesale pricing on
products) and that was my sole decision maker in choosing my
niche'? Believe me... that happens to a lot of folks.
Chances are I'd end up hating my
work, not connecting with my audience, and eventually falling flat on
my face. The passion just wouldn't be there. You have to
have a passion for your niche'!
For example: I really have no
interest in all the latest "zip-bang" computers and accessories that
continue to hit the market. I'm thrilled with my three year old
laptop and it does more than I need it to.
But what if I found a company who
was offering me a great deal on some of these products - and they even
drop shipped them direct for me? COOL... huh?
So I setup a fancy webpage and put
all the products on a nice webpage... and then I might pay for some
advertising for the site (and I'd probably get some sales). But
then I'd start realizing that there were hundreds (if not thousands) of
other e-tailers out there who were selling the same products.
So, back to the drawing board...
I'd lower my prices to be more
competitive and start making less and less money on each sale. I
really don't even care about these products (in my own life) so I'd
lack the passion and hands on knowledge that I should have to really
sell these things. I'd never want to write articles and content
for the site. A newsletter? Forget it... I wouldn't know
what to say to these folks.
Yes, I could probably fake it for a
while and pretend I care about this stuff, but rest assured my readers
would soon see right through me. And what kind of expert could I
be in the field? Not a very good one for sure.
Could I write my own ebook and sell
it at 100% profit on my website? Nope... not unless I had a ghost
writer do it for me... but if customers had questions or wanted advice
after they purchased my book, they'd be sadly disappointed.
Bottom line... I don't care about
these computers and therefore it would end up resulting in nothing but
headaches. Trust me... I've been there... done that! You
Need PASSION!
But now let's say I was audited by
the IRS a few years ago and I won a hard, long, drawn out battle with
them. Let's also assume that some friends of mine looked to me
for advice quite often on how they should deal with their own problems
they were having with the IRS.
Let's further assume that I read a
dozen books on how to end my IRS woes, and I went through two court
appearances, hired several attorneys, and passionately demonstrated to
people that they have rights too!
Do you think I could setup a
website that focused around "Dealing with the IRS"? You Bet I
could! I could passionately write articles, moderate newsgroups,
write reports, offer advice, etc, etc, etc.
Then, I could also go ahead and
setup an e-store on the backend and sell all types of products in the
store that focused around several categories:
- small business owners
- high income families
- professionals such as accountants and bookkeepers
Plus, in addition to the e-store, I
could do the following...
- I could add a self-help section
- Blog about the IRS
- Offer a link resource to all the helpful areas on the
web for those in the same situation
- Setup my newsletter (and do you think I'd get a large
following from those who were in the same mess?)
My point is this...
Focus your entire website and
niche' on something your passionate and knowledgeable about. It
may be slow out of the gate, but you'll soon have an incredible,
thriving business (with a huge opt-in database of subscribers that will
be loyal and eager to listen and follow your advice.

Do this now...
Write down on a piece of paper any
skills or techniques that you know would be of huge value to someone
who wants to learn your skill. Here's a short list to get your
creative juices flowing:
Graphics Design - Perhaps
you're very good at designing certain graphics on your computer and you
could show others how to do this easily. How about learning all
the in's and out's of a free graphics design software program?
There's a free graphics program available at http://www.irfanview.com.
There's a ton of folks who don't even know it exists and would love to
learn to design graphics that rock!
Legal Services - Perhaps you
put together your own Legal Will or document from a program you
purchased for $9 online and you could show others how easy it actually
is to do it themselves - step by step - all the way through to having
it finalized by an attorney.
Children's Book Club - My
wife happened to be searching the net the other day looking to see if
there were any types of websites where someone was reading children's
books via PC Video to toddlers. She COULD NOT Find any! I
thought that would be a great idea for someone to capitalize on - A
children's book club online via PC Videos. You could charge a
small monthly fee to join and read children's stories to kids of all
ages. What a great target audience you'd have as well to follow
up with in a newsletter.
Accounting - Are you great
with a particular bookkeeping program? I'm sure others would love
to learn how to do the same. They're struggling to keep their
"books" for their businesses in order and you'd be a lifesaver to them
if you could show them how to use a program and use it with ease -
ending their "CONFUSION'. Especially if you could find a
FREE resource or two to include that would add to the value of the
product by saving the buyer "X" amount of dollars by purchasing your
product.
Cooking - Are you the family
gourmet? Wouldn't others like to learn how to prepare your
favorite recipes as you cook right in front of their eyes - watching
you on their computer at their leisure. You can do that!
Again, another great idea for a paid membership site as well.
Decorating - Does everyone
compliment you on how you have that certain "flair" about you? Do
you constantly receive comments about how pretty your home decor is
arranged? Do you often help others design or redecorate their
homes and apartments because they "like your style"?
Landscaping - Is your flower
garden the envy of your neighbors? Wouldn't you love to produce
your own PC Video series or video ebook on how they could accomplish
this task themselves? How about writing an e-book to get started?
Video Games - Are you a star
at a particular video game? You have no idea how many others
would love to know your tips and tricks to beat their friends at the
same game. There's one young man currently online already at http://www.maddentips.com who
makes hundreds of thousands of dollars a year just offering tips to
players on how to win at Madden Football. Last I heard he was
well over a quarter million in profits this year alone.
Office software - You could
get free office software from
http://www.openoffice.org. There are millions of folks
online who don't even know this software exists - never mind how to use
this software once they find it. Couldn't you provide them with
this free software plus the ability to learn the software from you
personally.
Hell, I think we've all heard of
the "Video Professor". Here's a man who took the suite of
Microsoft Office products, created a PC Video series (on DVD) about how
to use them, and is making a FORTUNE selling these videos and DVD's to
folks all over the world. Well, what if you were to do the same
with the software from www.netoffice.org
Maybe you know of a different free software product very few
people know about and you can offer tutorials on how to use it.
I could keep going on and on, but I
hope you get the idea. We all have special knowledge and
expertise that others would easily pay for to learn from.
What profession are you in?
Is there some special computer
skills that you learned on the job that you could pass on to others?
Are you a volunteer firefighter and
could offer a PC video series on home fire safety? Put it on DVD
and sell it. Nowadays it would cost you practically nothing to
produce!
Did you know you could have just
ONE single DVD, Tee-Shirt, Coffee Mug, etc. printed any way you want
and there's a company who will produce the product (no upfront fee) and
ship all your orders to your customers for you. If you brainstorm
enough, you should be able to come up with something great using their
service. Check them out at http://www.cafepress.com
How about certain online tools you
can recommend that will help concerned parents keep their kids safe
while surfing the Internet? Become a respected watchdog online!
The list goes on and on....
Your first job is to brainstorm and
come up with a list of quality traits and skills that you have in your
possession - in your brain - that could be transferred into a great
informational product.
There is a plethora of people
looking for information and "how to products" to ease their CONFUSION
and your NEW job as an Internet marketer is to fill those voids.
Once your product idea is in place,
your next job is to market it effectively. So how do you do this?
- A capture page to get people
to sign up for your list
- Email them regularly with tips and valuable
information on the topic for FREE
- Build a relationship with your list
- Create superb sales copy (upcoming lessons)
- Offer them a GREAT product (PC VIDEOS ROCK) that will
excite, educate and entertain them.
- Do
these 5 things effectively and systematically and I guarantee folks
will whip out their wallets and buy into your offers over and over
again...
A great seller online these days is
"online training courses" such as this one. People are very
willing to pay YOU to teach them about a subject they are interested in
learning more about. And if you could create a product that not
only teaches, but also entertains (like this course ;-), your sales
will skyrocket.
